Parker

Parker had nearly reached the door to the women’s suites when someone called his name.

“Hey there, Parker.”

Tag’s smooth drawl reached him just before he felt a hand on his shoulder.

“Oh, hello, Tag,” Parker said, turning back to face him.

He felt a little twinge of guilt, knowing that he was about to go tell the woman they both cared for that he loved her.

“Walk with me, brother,” Tag said, leading him to the door that led to the yard behind the theater.

Parker went along, amazed to hear Tag call him brother, an honorific he thought was reserved for family.

His brothers Kent and Wayne were his family, as they had traveled to this planet together, even though they were not related in the way humans would construe from the term.

Perhaps Tag viewed him as his brother in the same way - not related physically but united by the television show.

They stepped into the sunlight, which was almost blinding after the dim hallway.

Tag headed to a shaded spot under a tree.

“Parker,” he said, leaning artfully against the tree, almost as if he expected his picture to be taken. “Parker, Parker, Parker-Parker-Parker…”

Parker waited politely, wondering what Tag was about to say.

But it seemed as if he wasn’t going to say anything.

“Yes?” Parker said after a moment.

“We have a lot in common, you and I,” Tag said, pushing himself off the tree and throwing an arm around Parker’s shoulder. “I know, I know, you can’t imagine that. You, so new to the scene, and me a big star. But it’s true.”

“It is?” Parker asked.

“Sure,” Tag said carelessly. “I was where you are once, a stranger in a strange land - no pun intended - overwhelmed by Hollywood.”

Parker was vaguely aware of a book about a human, raised as an alien, that was called by that title. But he knew Tag was not an alien.

He stared at the strange man, wondering what he was trying to say.

Tag raised an eyebrow at him expectantly.

“What is overwhelming about Hollywood?” Parker asked at last.

“Ha,” Tag bellowed. “Oh that’s classic, kid, exactly my point, exactly. Anyhow, I see what’s happening. You know that right?”

He smiled warmly at Parker.

“What’s happening?” Parker asked.

“I see you have a little crush on Ruby, and it’s real sweet,” Tag said. “But as you know, the show feels it’s best for me to be her love interest. And of course, she and I have a history. This is the whole reason they brought me on.”

“But what about how Ruby feels?” Parker asked.

“She’s always had a crush on me,” Tag said. “This is a dream come true for her.”

“I don’t believe you,” Parker said, shaking his head as his heart began to crumble.

“I figured you might say that,” Tag said sympathetically. “Look, I didn’t want you to have to see this, but I think it will actually make you feel better.” He cupped a hand to his mouth. “Lex, come on out, man!”

The blond cameraman emerged from the trees at the rear of the lot. Parker hadn’t even realized he was there.
